New Orleans feels different from other American cities of colonial heritage. It is venerable, timeworn, layered, and culturally complex in ways that call to mind ancient civilizations.
In mapping New Orleans, I wanted to evoke a sense of age, the antique sepia-ink creations of cartographers of the past.
It is also a city that reminds us that climate change is neither imagined nor peaceable. According to a 2013 article in The Lens, NOLA and the Louisiana coast may be facing the fastest rate of sea level rise worldwide.
